In the process of building the site, we recognized the greater benefit of making the online community available to everyone in the industry, not just PPA members. This means photographers will have instant access to more information, more creative ideas and more photographer friends than any other place online.”

PPA members asked for a dynamic, interactive online photography community, and after significant research and planning, http://www.ourppa.com/ is ready for launch. The intent is that the site’s many discussion forums and photography galleries will provide insight, education and networking for photographers worldwide. At no cost, photographers will be able to solicit advice from peers, exchange opinions on new products, share their images, or even seek mentors from a world of experienced professionals.

“Photography changes so fast that we all need answers during every step of our careers—and we often need those answers in a hurry, so developing this online community makes perfect sense,” proclaims Sandy Puc’, Colorado photographer on PPA ’s board of directors, who was instrumental in the creation of the resource. “It’s always easier to ask questions, try new things and go through growing pains when surrounded by a support group, which is exactly what photographers will find at OurPPA.com.”

The forums are divided into numerous categories—New Ideas, Rookies, Copyright, Legal, Business, Marketing, Portrait, Wedding, Sports & Events, Commercial, Technology and Photoshop—so photographers with different specialties and photographers of varying levels of experience will all be able to find a place in the online community where they can get the answers and information they need.

“We’ll continue to add new resources and features to the site,” assures Gregory Aide, PPA Production Manager who will support the community from PPA’s headquarters. “We already have a broad base of users, but as it grows, and as we collect more input, the community itself will determine what additions and changes are needed. The users will find their own direction and mold the community themselves.”

About PPA
Professional Photographers of America, the world’s largest and most influential photographic and imaging trade organization, exists to assist its more than 14,000 members in achieving their professional, artistic, and fraternal goals; to promote public awareness of the profession; and to advance the making of images in all of its disciplines as an art, a science and a visual recorder of history. Lenses for hockey...I generally use a 70-200 zoom or a 300mm f/2.8 depending on where I am shooting
2.
What is the optimal ISO, Shutter Speed, F stop and WB for digital in sport action? Should I use direct flash or else?- Victor Kong
Wow. Long question. Many variables here including which sport/ indoor and outdoor so the ISO is going to be all according to where you are shooting and the conditions you are faced with. Generally, I use auto whitebalance in many situations unless I am in an arena where the light is constant. As well, direct flash is a bad look and I feel it should be avoided
3.
I am kind of new to photography and was wondering how do you go about getting into shooting professionally for sports teams?- Shannon Guerra
Best to start off getting experience shooting kids and maybe some oldtimers and industrial leagues. Get your work together and then approach local magazines and weekly papers. You won't make much mmoney, but maybe they can get you in to shoot a game or two. make some contacts while there. Also, build your portfolio that way.
4.
Can you describe how you establish a "pace" to get the "pivotal moment?"- W. A. Edwards
Well the pace used to be held up 36 frames at a time. Now with digital we can go a few hundred at a clip. More important than ruinning the motor drive, is to pick your spots. Experience will be your guide and the more you shoot the better you will get at picking your spots.
5.
Can you recommed a good tripod?- terry Marsters
Sorry. No. I've got one, and don't know the brand. Rubbed off years ago!!! Not great for sports. I do use a Gitzo brand monopd, have several, and find them valuable for those long lenses.
6.
Do you have to have a telephoto or a super telephoto for sports?- Shannon Guerra
telephoto is fine, but that is determined by what sport you are shooting. baseball and soccer usually require 300mm and up. Basketball can be done with shorter as can hockey
7.
Yes my friends and i are taking a class and we had a slide show at my house and showed them all to each other besides just 4-5 in class it was great.- terry Marsters
8.
I have a FujiFilm FinePix A330 3.2 MP...Can I get decent sports shots with this camera, without having to be on the field playing?- Lisa Newberry
Sorry. I'm not familiar with that camera. What is the focal length of the lens?
9.
What approach do you suggest for shooting children's sports?- Robert Wersan
Best tip is to get down to their level. Also see their eyes. That's important. Be patient and wait. look for celebration and dejection.
10.
How many W/L units do you put about the ice? Which model and what power setting? Thankyou- Timothy Courtemanche
We are still using someof the older 1800 model, but also have been using the Alien Bee 1600's. Eight will flood most ice surfaces, but you can also get by with just two, one over each shoulder and just shoot half ice or half court
11.
What shutter speed would you recommend to use with panning to get a sharper subject with blurred surroundings?- Kent Gemmell
With panning I generally use 1/8th or 1/15th
12.
any rules or ethics behind sports photography?- Nicholas Shelton
Keep your elbows down??? Not sure of the meaning of your question.
13.
how many cameras do you normally use for a hockey event?- Marvil Higgins
Personally I usually bring just two, and use one for most action, the second as a backup. In some arenas I will use a 35-350mm lens and then there is no need for anything else. And I don't miss anything because I don't have to put the camera down to pick up one with another lens.
14.
Are stabilizer lenses really worth the extra cost?- john aseff
Personally I don't like the feel of the lens vibrating while I'm holding it. I find it distracting. However, in low light, on things other than sports, I find the stabilizer useful.
15.
I just bought a new Konica Minolta Dimage 2 and I have haveing a heck of a time getting it to focus right. Any suggestions?- Scarlet McDonald
Sorry. I'm not familiar with that model
16.
Are youprimarly conventional or digital? And if digital, How has it affected your shooting, and shooting style?- Doug Kranz
We are 95% digital and love it
17.
Bruce: If any digitgal, what %? And what brand do you find renders best color for your work?- George Hawkins
We shoot 95% digital and try not to shoot film anymore. As for brand, Canon and Nikon both make great products
18.
Your shots have much better color than mine. Do you shoot digital, and if so, what's your recomendation for better color? I shoot a EOS 10D.- John Gozelski
Yes, most of our work is digital. Inside sports though we shoot with indoor sports in the rafters of arenas. Try ASA200 at f/8!!! Great sharp images and superior bright color. With the 10D try adjusting white balance settings. Not sure if the a saturation setting. If not try saturating more in the computer
19.
I'm new to this - do we ask our questions to the right of the Q&A and Chat buttons?- john aseff
20.
Which sports do you find the toughest / easiest in getting consistently good shots? Why?- Tavish Baker
21.
Do you recommend any particular camera for sports photography, and do you prefer digital or film?- Lisa Newberry
I prefer digital as it is a great way to see what you shot immediately. I use Canon, but Nikon is fine. Top of the line cameras are better as there is very little delay when you push the shutter button. All cameras have some delay, but digital cameras are getting better all the time.
22.
The strobes you use in arenas; are they distracting to the players or are they just caught up in the action and don't really notice?- Ken Cavin
usually the strobes aren't noticed. Especially in big arenas where the strobes are high up. In samller venues where you can't put the lights up high and they are more directional towards the players (instead of above them) you may get complaints from participants.
23.
I'm new to this - do we ask our questions to the right of the Q&A and Chat buttons?- john aseff
24.
Do you recommend any particular camera for sports photography, and do you prefer digital or film?- Lisa Newberry
Digital is my preference and best to use top of the line Nikon or Canon cameras.
25.
Which digital are you using and what rez do you shoot at?- Timothy Courtemanche
Canon 1d currently although Canon 1dS is on order. I shoot at Large Jpeg compressed and rarely shoot at RAW mode. haven't seen any need for it
26.
what program do you use for noise reduction of high iso images?- Jason Draper
I currently use Photoshop, Thumbsplus, ACDSee and Fotostation...but rarely do anything to reduce the noise. I live with it
27.
What is your opinion on the new wireless technology (for example the Nikon D2H with Wt-1A Wireless Transmitter attached). Are you using it?- Gonzalo Villota
I use Canon and although I've heard about this I haven't seen it in person. It really doesn't have any useful application for me at this time.
28.
I just got back in- sue clapsadle
29.
When photographing kids events, like softball. Do you capture full frame so the torso is in the pic and maybe not the hands/legs/arms? Or is it better to kick back and get everything in with more "white space"?- Kevin Krawczuk
A little of both. We avoid awkward cropping and never cut off participants at the joints. So it's full length or cut off at the waist. Never cut an athlete off at the knees (same as if you're playing football)!! White space is great too as long as athletes are going in to the frame and not out of it.
30.
How many strobes do you generally mount in an arena?- john aseff
Depends on the size of the arena, but 8 is considered a full set. Four on each side. You can light half an arena with just two lights, one over each shoulder if you are saving time and money.
31.
How Can I eliminate the contrast between extreme light and dark when shooting Hang gliding photos- sue clapsadle
Stop shooting hang gliding!! Not too sure, really. If you mean the silhouetting of an object against the sky, try using an incident light meter to help and set the camera manually. Don't use automatic because the sky will through off the exposure
32.
In football what area of the field do you think is better for close up shots on the faces. And do you always look through eye piece while following a ball?- Cory Carter
For faces, quite simply, I would hang around the bench area. For closeup on anything on the field you would need a 600mm and above. That's alot to carry. I always look through the eyepiece but keep my other eye open so I don't get tackled or him by a ball, stick, puck whatever.
33.
When shooting a hockey game what ASA setting do you find more useful with a digital? 100? 200? 400?- john aseff
You have to set your ASA depending on how much light you have to work with. Back in to the ASA by knowing that you need 1/500th second to freeze the action, and with the lens wide open, what is the corresponding ASA. In many medium level arenas you are probably looking at roughly 800ASA 500th second at 2.8
34.
You mentioned sending pics to the papers.. Directly to the editor? CD? Prints? B&W?- Kevin Krawczuk
These digital days, it's OK to call a paper (small paper call the editor, large paper call the photo editor) and request their e-mail address to driop a few pix. It's also very permissible to shoot some sports events onyour own and e-mail hot photos for possible use. Get complete detailsincluding players names and include that with your e-mail. Also sending on CD is OK too...but it may never be seen. They are generally too busy.
35.
Do you ever work with an assistant? If so, what is his/her functon?- Robert Wersan
Assistants are there to learn the trade, carry the heavy stuff, shoot from angles that I can't get to, fix broken strobes. Things like that. If an assistant, use the opportunity to learn.
36.
To answer your question about my FujiFilm FinePix A330, its focal length of the lens is 5.7- Lisa Newberry
37.
Do you find high frame rates essential or do you shot in single shot modes. I sometimes find 3fps may not be fast enough, yet the cost for 8fps puts the bodies out of reach.- Jason Draper
3fps should be sufficient for almost everything you shoot. Yes I do sometimes rely on 8 fps for a burst or two...but then I have to EDIT all that stuff. Too time consuming. Bestter to work on your timing instead of using your camera as a machine gun. Even though I know its a really cool sound
38.
Bruce, Any suggestions on shooting football (high school fields are horribly lit. Am having problems being able to use fast enough shutter speeds to freeze the action.- Michael Hajek
Those fields at night uslly are brutal. No real option other than a fast lens. 300mm 2.8 or 400mm 2.8, 1600 ASA. Sorry. It will be grainy or noisy
39.
I work with White Lightning. Where could i get a instructions on using the lights?- Sal Chavez
Paul C Buffs web site should be a good resource . Otherwise the units ship with some basic instructions. You will need the telphoto heads to help direct light to the ice, and super clampsor similar to clamp them up. We also use 'pocket Wizard' units to remotely trigger the lights.
40.
Have you used tamron's 24-135 and if so what are your impressions for upclose sports?- Kevin Krawczuk
I use a few different Tamron lenses but don't know that one. I've used the 28-105 2.8 often, and more recently have been testing out the 200-500mm. Love it!!! great focal length. Also use the 20-40 and the 14mm Tamrons
41.
What Tamron Lens would you recommend for Fri Night Football?- Cory Carter
The 300mm 2.8 is fast enough to use under the lights and is pricing WAY under the Canon and Nikon brands
42.
what has been your scarriest moment in shooting sports?- Doug Kranz
This Chatroom
43.
What is your best advice on selling photos?Who should i market with myself or a company?- Sal Chavez
Be persistant..but not annoying. Send photos around to photo editors...but only your best. Follow up with a call. I believ that these days you are better off building a beautiful web site and sending out cards and letters to promote it
44.
In relation to my question #30, where are you positioned in an arena in relation to the strobes?- john aseff
Especially if you just light with two strobes, one should be behind you over each shoulder. If lighting with 8, you can be anywhere and you should have pretty even light depending on ceiling height
45.
I've been photographing my niece in horse show, sort of like steeplechase. Any recomendations on how to get the best shots?- John Gozelski
Sorry, I only shot one horse event and that was 25 years ago. I believe that you should be perpendicular to the jumps, otherwise you may have the horses head in focus and not the riders
46.
any suggestions on how to light a high school gym for volleybal?- David Joseph
Same white lightnings. And if you can, set them up high in the four corners 25-50' back from the court. You can light from one side if that is the only way to do it and the results won't look too bad.
47.
Bruce is a fast typist!- Robert Wersan
Yes I am. One finger typist too.
48.
Bruce do you use tripods for everything?- terry Marsters
Never use tripods..except for hockey team shots. witha 2-1/4 camera. Use monopods and they provide better manuverability. Check my spelling
49.
Any tips to handheld and keep the camera still for sharp image?- Victor Kong
Yes.hold the lens from underneath it.plant your elbow in your chest to steady the camera and lens. Also lean against something to steady yourself or sit//kneel on the ground.
50.
What angle of the sun and/or what time do you think is better for outdor sports shoots?- Tomas Mac Master
early morning or late afternoon will give you a very warm yellowish look so more towards midday is preffered. I also prefer overcast days because this eliminates harsh shadows.
51.
Have you evr shot skateboarding events and if so film, lens etc- terry Marsters
That also was a one shot deal many years ago. Not sure I really knew what I was doing back then, but I prefrred superwide lens up close and UNDER the skateboarder looking up at him
52.
Other then the chat room, what was your scarriest moment shooting sports?- Doug Kranz
I was hit with a slapshot at Madison Square Garden, and as I gasped for air on the floor of the penalty box, the linesman appeared over me and asked, "the girl in the front row wants to know if your date is still ontonight?"
53.
Bruce, what is the slowest low grain film you've ever used to shoot motorsports i.e. Motorcycles Superbikes- James Egbert
I used to use Kodachrome 64...but I don't speak film anymore. I was a big fan of Fujichrome 100 and use it for many years until digital killed it.
54.
Same as question#46 , but what if you have only 1 Norman 200C on a radio slave and a on camera flash unit for shooting a volleyball game....what do you think? Can I get good results ? - David Joseph
55.
I know because I am a track photographer :P- Doug Kranz
56.
tell me more about the tamron 200-500 how good is it wide open? What's the sweet spot f stop.- Richard Feuer
I've used it on an amateur baseball game and on a bunch of soccer game sthis past weekend. I found it to be sharp edge to edge and most of my shooting hovered around f/8 although some went down to 6.3. Swet spot, not sure, but it did the job capably and provided a wide range of focal lengths to play with.
57.
SORRY, BUT I DON'T SEE THE ANSWER TO # 54.....?- David Joseph
58.
Sports photography is not my cup of tea, but it's always interesting to learn how people get their images.- Robert Wersan
59.
I'll have a press pass for the Minnesota Girls' State Swim Meet. ANy pointers for shooting an event like that?- Ivy Bailie
60.
I'll have a press pass for the Minnesota Girls' High School State Swim Meet... Any good ideas or tips for shooting an event like that?- Ivy Bailie
61.
Thanks Bruce, this was really helpful. You have some great shots, I love shooting at the Garden, but never get a chance to be up front like you! Thanks Again! Kevin Krawczuk- Kevin Krawczuk

This Week In Photography
